Lacock

The National Trust village of Lacock is only 15 minutes away.  As well as 'bewitching' scenes in Harry Potter, Lacock is the romantic setting for Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Emma.  Lacock Abbey was founded by Lady Ela, the Countess of Salisbury, in the reign of King Henry III.  Her husband, an illegitimate son of King Henry II, was one of the Barons who led the revolt against King John.

As a result, Lacock possesses one of the three original copies of the Magna Carta.  The Village has many architectural designs from the early timber framework to the Georgian pediment.  The tithe barn, 14th century doorways and several old weavers cottages make it a delight to explore.  It was in the 13th century Abbey that Fox Talbot created the first photographic negative and so pioneered Photography.  The whole village, with its small streets, was given to the National Trust in 1944.
