Devizes

Lying just over 10 miles from us and almost in the centre of Wiltshire, Devizes first appeared after the Norman Conquest and received its first charter in 1141

In the early 18th century Devizes was a market town trading in corn cattle, hops, horses and Wool.  Prosperous merchants built town houses in and around the market place and the town  is now home to over 500 listed buildings.  The 16 locks of the famous Caen Hill flight on the  Kennet and Avon Canal were built at the turn of end of the 18th century as a direct result of Devizes' trading position between Bristol & London.

The present castle was built in the 19th century as a private residence although the original wooden Castle was constructed in 1080 by Bishop Osmund, before being rebuilt in stone in 1120 after a fire.  During the civil war the castle changed hands twice before King Henry I's daughter, Empress Matilda, held it until her death in 1167 where it passed to her son Henry II.  It was later dismantled after the battle of Roundway Down.
