The Surrounding Area Bowood Bowood, the family home of The Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne, is less than 10 miles away. It's been open to the public since 1975 and it's not difficult to see why millions of people have flocked to the estate over the years. The original imposing stately home was mostly demolished in 1955. The remaining wing is set in glorious parkland. Vast, sloping lawns stretch out from the Italian style terraced garden and lead to the peaceful lake beyond. As with nearby Longleat, the grounds at Bowood were designed and sculpted by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, the famous 18th Century landscape gardener. The tremendous Adventure Playground will keep the young at heart excited whilst the library and paintings are well worth a visit by the more culturally minded! Of course, for the golfers, Bowood is one of the top ten courses in the country. |
