The Surrounding Area
In Celtic times the sacred spring was surrounded by an oak tree grove where druids worshipped the guardian goddess Sul. In 43AD, the Romans built a magnificent temple to their goddess Minerva where the druids' grove had been and Bath now has the most famous Roman remains in Britain. Bath is the only city in Britain to designated as a 'World Heritage Site', an honour it received in 1987. The classical eighteenth-century Georgian architecture offers a real feast for the eyes since there are more grade 1 listed buildings here than in central London. |
